We're testing out Outlook 2011 for our users, and we've noticed that the canned 'Conversation' view does not show unread emails consistently. Some new emails that come in after the application is launched shows unread status, but the majority of emails that exist in the inbox before the application is launched does not show unread count in the conversation view.
You’d expect Outlook 2013 to contain a powerful set of tools, but there’s a surprise that makes it unlike any version of Outlook before it: It’s gorgeous. And that well-designed interface only enhances one of Outlook 2013’s best features: its customizability. Here are the top 5 ways to customize Outlook 2013. (All of the changes below are made via the View tab, which is located in the top-level navigation.) 1.
The Change View Menu The first item in the View tab is the Change View menu. Change View Menu The default view is Compact, but you can change it to Single, which streamlines your inbox items and adds columns of information (see No. 3 below for more on columns) for each message.
Your inbox simultaneously becomes easier to scan and more information-rich. Compact Single The Change View menu also allows you to turn on or off the Preview pane — just click “Preview” to toggle it on or off. Show as Conversation The “Show as Conversations” option allows Outlook to group emails by conversation, so your inbox is less cluttered. Click the “Show as Conversations” check box.
A warning will appear that asks if you want to turn conversations on for every inbox, or just the folder you are in. Choose the one that fits.
Adjusting Columns As mentioned above, viewing your inbox in the Single view gives you more columns of information for each message. The columns are customizable as well:. You can adjust which columns display.
You can adjust their order. To make either change, right-click listing pane and select “Add Columns” from the drop-down menu. This brings up a menu where you can adjust the columns that show up in Outlook’s inbox. You can add and subtract columns as well as move them up or down in importance. Higher items appear to the left.
Unread Messages By default, Outlook 2013 shows unread messages highlighted blue with a blue bar to the left. While this is fine for a nearly empty inbox, if you get messages about important items or from people you need to notice immediately, there is now conditional formatting for the inbox. Click “View Settings” and select “Conditional Formatting.” Here you can change existing rules or create your own. Let’s say your mother sends you a recipe once a week, and you really want that to stand out. You can very easily create a rule that looks for emails from your mother that include the word “recipe.” Once you determine the rule, you tell Outlook how to display emails that match the rule. You can pick a different font, make them bold, change their color, or even make the font bigger.
Save View Once you iron out the perfect inbox view for yourself, you can save it. This allows you to have different views for different projects, people, or even days of the week. For example, during the week you can have work emails show up large and on top of personal emails, but on the weekend you can have emails from friends and family take precedence. To save a view for later, click “Change View.” A drop-down will appear. Click “Save Current View as a New View” To load a previously saved view, click the same “Change View” “Manage Views.” If you’ve made too many changes to your view and need to start over, click “Reset View.”.
